I saw a video on Instagram (it actually came from tiktok) showing a machine making granny squares. But it didn’t show the actual result close enough to be able to judge whether it really resembled crochet or not! The user is a Turkish lady called hayattorgusu

But there are no useful comments or info.

At that time, there was exactly ONE machine in production in the entire world that was capable of true crochet, and it could only do edgings.

Hi Helen, thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! It’s really cool that you can crochet one handed and like I wrote above, I do believe that there are two components to it. I feel like it’s probably possible to automate at least some part of crocheting, but there just doesn’t appear to be a real need for it right now. I’m glad my article gave you some food for thought, I had a lot of fun researching it!

Even if someone could think of a way to make a crochet machine work, will there be a research and development phase to help support the idea? Lots of things to think about. Btw, I crochet with a DIY adaptive crochet aid where I can use just one hand to crochet. A few people from my TikTok have said the technique that I use could be the start of a crochet machine. But I don’t think so. As you’ve said, crochet has not only basic stitches but also complex stitches that are too complicated for a machine. Thank you for writing this article!

That’s so crazy! Metal and bone hooks sound really intriguing — it’s incredible that you’ve been able to discover these treasures. Thanks so much for sharing with me <3

I have a collection of crochet hooks that include some that belonged to my mother and maternal grandmother. I have been trying to determine just how old some of the metal and bone hooks are. I crochet but never liked knitting, not sure why.
